Material identity

Aquamarine is the green-blue to blue variety of beryl; emerald belongs to the same mineral species but has a different colour range. GIA describes aquamarine crystals that can be large, well formed, and relatively free of visible inclusions. These characteristics help explain its use in faceted gems and ambitious lapidary works.

Heating can shift some aquamarine towards a bluer appearance. Treatment, species, and provenance should be recorded separately: identifying beryl does not establish a mine, and a pleasing blue colour does not reveal whether heating occurred. [1]

Documented historical context

The name aquamarine combines Latin words for water and the sea. GIA also records protective lore, although its short account does not place every story within a securely dated ancient source.

A precisely dated episode is Brazil’s gift of a large aquamarine to Eleanor Roosevelt in 1936. The gem served as a diplomatic gift and is now associated with the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum.

A different modern history is embodied in the Dom Pedro aquamarine, carved by Bernd Munsteiner into an obelisk and now displayed at the Smithsonian. That work belongs to artistic gem cutting and public collecting. These examples place aquamarine in language, state gift giving, and modern lapidary art rather than assigning it one universal maritime meaning. [2] [3]
