Reading the material guide
Each entry distinguishes material identity, documented historical or community use, and TÁWID’s contemporary design interpretation. Scientific properties describe the material. Cultural meanings are attributed to a named community, period, object, or source. Filipino design titles identify TÁWID’s present-day interpretation.
An archaeological or museum example establishes a particular use. It does not, by itself, establish the origin of a modern bracelet, an uninterrupted tradition, or the same meaning for every community. Commercial names and photographs also cannot substitute for material identification.
Philippine and Austronesian connections
Nephrite: Taiwan-linked ear ornaments document regional maritime exchange. Read Nephrite Jade and the Hung et al. study (2007).
Carnelian and agate: an Ifugao bonngol ensemble documents ceremonial adornment and social position. Read Carnelian and Museo Kordilyera’s object record.
Glass and shell: a late nineteenth–early twentieth-century Isneg sipattal provides a specific example of traded materials incorporated into community adornment. See the Met’s Isneg object record. The National Museum separately documents early shell ornaments in Palawan. Shell and loose pearls are distinct materials.
Pearls: the Philippines is a documented producer of golden South Sea cultured pearls. See Pearl for the production context and identification distinctions.
Obsidian: early Philippine artefacts support research into mobility and material access. Read Obsidian. These early archaeological contexts are distinguished from later Austronesian comparisons.
Wider comparisons retain their community context: the nephrite and serpentine entries discuss Māori pounamu without treating Māori meanings as universal Filipino or Austronesian meanings.
