GYPSUM

Gypsum is a soft sulfate mineral composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate (CaSO₄·2H₂O). It forms through the evaporation of mineral-rich waters, particularly in ancient seas and saline lakes, leaving behind layered deposits over time. With a hardness of 2 on the Mohs scale, gypsum is one of the softer minerals and can be easily carved or shaped. Well-known varieties include selenite (clear, crystalline) and alabaster (fine-grained, used for carving).
Historically, gypsum has been widely used across civilizations. In ancient Egypt, alabaster gypsum was carved into vessels, sculptures, and funerary objects. In the Mediterranean and Middle East, gypsum was also used in architecture, particularly as plaster and decorative relief. Its ease of shaping made it an accessible material for both everyday and ceremonial use.

Scientifically, gypsum is valued for:

• Its crystalline forms and transparency (selenite)
