HEMATITE

International Context
Hematite is an iron oxide mineral with the chemical formula Fe₂O₃, and one of the primary ores of iron used throughout human history. It forms in sedimentary, metamorphic, and hydrothermal environments, often appearing as metallic gray, black, or reddish masses depending on its structure. Despite its metallic appearance, hematite produces a distinct reddish-brown streak, a defining diagnostic property. With a hardness of 5–6.5 on the Mohs scale, it is durable enough for beads, ornaments, and tools.

Historically, hematite has been used since prehistoric times as both a pigment and a material. Ground hematite produced red ochre, one of the earliest pigments used by humans in cave paintings, burial practices, and body adornment.

Archaeological evidence shows its use across Africa, Europe, and Asia, where it was associated with life, blood, and ritual significance. Later, hematite also became important as a source of iron, linking it to the development of tools, weapons, and early industry.
