Material identity
Bloodstone, or heliotrope, is a dark green, fine-grained silica material with contrasting red iron-oxide inclusions, particularly hematite. Its appearance explains the descriptive English name. It is not blood-bearing, and the red markings are mineral inclusions rather than evidence of a biological property.
It belongs to the chalcedony family and is commonly fashioned as a cabochon. The distribution of red markings and green background helps distinguish individual pieces aesthetically. A product should still be identified from its material characteristics rather than from a name applied to any green stone with red spots. [1]
Documented historical context
GIA records the Greek-derived name “heliotrope,” referring to turning the sun, and an old belief that the stone could redden the sun when placed in water. A Christian interpretation instead understood its red markings as the blood of Christ. These are different cultural readings of the material’s appearance, rather than explanations of its formation.
GIA illustrates engraved bloodstone from the Roman world and a silver-and-bloodstone bracelet made in Taxco, Mexico, around 1953. Carving and silverwork gave the material different forms in these settings. The references do not establish a particular Filipino ceremonial history for bloodstone; TÁWID’s theme of sustained effort is contemporary. [1]
