Material identity

Pink tourmaline belongs to the tourmaline group of boron-bearing silicates. Colour alone does not identify the exact species or geographical source. The range from pale pink to strongly saturated pink-red can guide visual selection, but a product description should keep colour, mineral identity and provenance distinct. [1]

Documented historical context

Tourmaline’s commercial history includes a late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century link between California mining and Chinese demand. GIA describes how George F. Kunz promoted material from Maine and California, while large quantities of San Diego County pink and red tourmaline were shipped to China. Empress Dowager Cixi’s preference helped sustain a market in which craftspeople made snuff bottles and jewellery components.

This was not simply the circulation of a universally meaningful “love stone.” It connected deposits, mining enterprises, international trade, elite taste and particular forms of carving. GIA relates the disruption of the California trade to the collapse of the Chinese government in 1912, illustrating how political change could alter gemstone demand. The chronology gives the material a specific economic and cultural setting.

Tourmaline also illustrates the history of identification: differently coloured stones were formerly confused with other gems, and its name is linked to a Sinhalese term used for mixed gems.
