Material identity
Agate is banded chalcedony, a fine-grained quartz material. The Smithsonian describes agates forming when silica-rich water deposits layers along the walls of cavities, commonly in volcanic rocks. Differences between successive layers produce the bands revealed by cutting and polishing. A polished bead is therefore a selected cross-section through a larger mineral formation.
“Botswana” adds a geographical claim to this material name. That claim should rest on the supplier’s chain of information for the specific batch, rather than on a grey, pink, or brown colour pattern alone. Similar banding can occur in agates from different places. [1]
Documented historical context
Banded agate appears in the documented Kalinga bongor ensemble described below. In that necklace, a single agate occupies the centre while differently shaped carnelian and glass beads form the surrounding composition. [2]
Philippine and community context
Bahay Ugnayan’s Kalinga bongor has a banded agate centrepiece, hexagonal carnelian piniyapiyas, irregular carnelian ballurong, and yellow, orange, and brown glass beads. Its record notes that the necklace was restrung by Patis Tesoro.
Drawing on Abellera’s 1981 research on heirloom beads in Lubo, Kalinga-Apayao, the account describes piniyapiyas as formerly valued at the equivalent of a small pig and believed to have come from India. It also notes changing bead values under external and modern influences. The necklace combines local naming and appraisal with the circulation of several materials. Its agate is not identified as Botswana material. [2]
