INTERNATIONAL CONTEXT
Botswana agate is a variety of banded chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz) formed through volcanic activity. Its distinctive layered patterns—soft grays, browns, creams, and muted pinks—develop over millions of years as silica-rich solutions fill rock cavities in rhythmic bands.

Globally, banded agates have been valued since antiquity:
*Used in Mesopotamian and Mediterranean amulets
*Traded across Africa, Asia, and Europe
*Carried along maritime and overland trade networks

Because of its layered formation, agate has long symbolized:

In the Cordillera, banded agate is locally valued as adchóngan among the Ifugao and appears as the central bead in heirloom configurations such as:

• Adchóngan (Ifugao) – often positioned as the focal or “pusod” bead
• Bongor (Kalinga) – where the center bead anchors the strand’s structure and meaning
