Material identity

Tourmaline is a group of related boron-bearing silicate minerals with variable chemical composition and a broad colour range. Dark Mixed Tourmaline describes an assortment chosen for a bracelet, not one formally defined species. The darkness of a bead is insufficient to determine its tourmaline species or the cause of its colour. [1]

Documented historical context

GIA traces tourmaline’s trade name to a Sinhalese expression associated with mixed gems and to the sorting of Sri Lankan gem gravels. Before modern mineralogical identification, coloured tourmalines could be mistaken for other gems. That history helps explain why historical colour terms cannot always be mapped neatly onto present-day mineral species.

A later trade connected California with China. GIA describes shipments of pink and red tourmaline from San Diego County to Chinese workshops during the time of Empress Dowager Cixi, where material was carved and used in jewellery. The collapse of this market following political upheaval in 1912 affected Californian production. This is a particular history of colour preference, international demand and mining. [2]
