Material identity
Strawberry quartz is a commercial term rather than a tightly standardized mineral name. In quartz containing red hematite inclusions, the visible colour comes from those included crystals. A different material sold under the same name can be a quartz aggregate with reddish mica. These distinctions concern the material’s actual structure, not merely alternative names for the same colour. [1]
Documented historical context
Laboratory reports provide a recent, documented history for the name. GIA’s Winter 2004 notes described quartz whose thin red inclusions were identified as hematite by Raman analysis. A later 2021 report showed that a bangle submitted as strawberry quartz was instead pink aventurine quartz with muscovite inclusions.
Read together, the reports show a commercial category being examined and refined through scientific identification. That is a meaningful history even without an ancient legend: cutters, sellers, buyers and laboratories may use the same attractive name while referring to different materials. The 2021 authors also place strawberry-quartz jewellery in a Taiwanese market context. [1] [2]
