Material identity
Moonstone is a feldspar gem displaying adularescence: a soft, apparently moving light caused by interaction with internal layers. GIA describes intergrown orthoclase and albite separating into alternating layers during cooling. The effect changes as the gem or observer moves. Some material sold as “rainbow moonstone” is labradorite, while manufactured opalescent glass is a different material altogether. [3]
Documented historical context
Moonstone’s documented design history includes the Arts and Crafts movement in the later nineteenth century and Art Nouveau around the turn of the twentieth. GIA names René Lalique and Louis Comfort Tiffany among designers who used the material. Its shifting sheen offered a visual resource for designs concerned with flowing forms, atmosphere and the appearance of natural materials.
Later fashions gave the same material different settings. GIA describes renewed popularity during the 1960s and among 1990s New Age designers. This changing reception is historically more informative than presenting one timeless meaning of intuition or femininity. A nineteenth-century silver object, an Art Nouveau jewel and a late-twentieth-century crystal-market product can use related material while addressing different tastes and audiences.
GIA also reports a Hindu account associating moonstone with moonbeams. Such an account belongs to the history of belief, not the mineral’s formation mechanism. A closer cultural discussion would require a specific text, period and community; the scientific explanation remains the optical behaviour of feldspar layers. [2]
