RED AGATE

Red agate is a banded variety of chalcedony (SiO₂), colored by iron oxide inclusions that give it its deep red to rust tones.

According to the Gemological Institute of America, agate forms through gradual silica deposition in volcanic rock cavities and has a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7, making it durable for beads and amulets. Archaeological collections such as those at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History document its long use in trade beads and protective ornaments across the Mediterranean, Middle East, and Asia.
