Material identity

Tiger’s eye is a quartz gem material with chatoyancy: a band of reflected light that appears to move as the stone, light source or viewer changes position. The appearance depends on oriented internal structures and on the direction in which the material is cut. A rounded, polished surface can make the moving reflection especially conspicuous. [1] [2]

Documented historical context

Tiger’s eye also has a history within geological research. A widely repeated explanation described it as quartz replacing pre-existing crocidolite while preserving a fibrous form. In 2003, Peter Heaney and Donald Fisher proposed a different interpretation based on the material’s textures: synchronous mineral growth during repeated opening and sealing of veins.

Their interpretation matters because a familiar polished stone can preserve evidence of processes that are more complicated than its sales description. Scientific accounts can be revised when microscopy reveals relationships between its constituent materials. The result is a history of observation, explanation and debate, rather than a fixed story inferred from the stone’s resemblance to an eye. [3]

Material note

Chatoyancy is visible under suitable lighting; it is not a light generated by the gem. The strongest band depends partly on the cutter’s decisions, making craftsmanship part of the final appearance.
