Moss agate is a variety of chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz, SiO₂) distinguished by its translucent body with green, moss-like inclusions formed by minerals such as iron or manganese. Despite its name, it does not contain organic plant matter; its patterns result from mineral growth within silica during formation, often in volcanic or sedimentary environments. With a hardness of 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale, moss agate is durable and widely used in beads, carvings, and ornamental objects.

Historically, moss agate has been used across different regions as a decorative stone, valued for its natural patterns resembling vegetation and landscapes. It appears in jewelry traditions in Europe, India, and parts of Asia, where it was appreciated for its connection to nature.
