Cherry quartz is a man-made glass material created to resemble natural quartz varieties, characterized by its translucent red to pink tones and internal swirling patterns. Unlike natural quartz (SiO₂), which forms through geological processes over millions of years, cherry quartz is produced through controlled heating and coloring of glass. Its composition reflects modern material technology rather than mineral formation.
While it does not occur in nature, cherry quartz belongs to a long tradition of glassmaking cultures, particularly those that developed in regions such as the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and later Europe. Glass bead production expanded significantly through global trade, with centers like Venice contributing to the widespread circulation of decorative beads. These materials traveled across continents, becoming integrated into local adornment practices in Asia, Africa, and the Americas.
