Smoky quartz is a variety of quartz composed of silicon dioxide (SiO₂). Its distinctive brown to smoky-gray coloration develops when natural radiation interacts with trace aluminum impurities within the crystal structure.
Quartz forms in igneous and hydrothermal environments, where silica-rich fluids slowly crystallize over time. With a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, smoky quartz is durable and well suited for beads, carvings, and ornamental jewelry.

Smoky quartz occurs in many regions of the world, including Brazil, Switzerland, Madagascar, Scotland, and the United States. One of the most historically famous varieties is Cairngorm quartz, found in the Scottish Highlands, where it became associated with traditional Scottish jewelry and ceremonial adornment. Because quartz is one of the most abundant minerals in the Earth’s crust, it has been used by human societies for tools, ornaments, and ritual objects for thousands of years.
